2013 Dulcimer Festival Headliners Announced!

Hello all! I’m pleased to announce the headliners and out-of-state instructors for the 2013 Colorado Dulcimer Festival, being held February 1st and 2nd, 2013.

On the Hammered Dulcimer side, we have Bill Robinson. He’s a third generation hammered dulcimer play who’s been inducted into the Fox Valley Arts hall of fame. If you want to see him perform, you can check him out on YouTube here: LINK.

For the Mountain Dulcimer, we’re going to feature Anne Lough.  Teaching Mountain Dulcimer (and autoharp too!) for over 35 years, Anne is an accomplished dulcimerist, and her dedication to teaching will be a welcome contribution to this year’s festival.  To see Anne perform, check her out on YouTube: LINK

So, now that the performers are announced, be sure to keep an eye on the Colorado Dulcimer Festival website to stay informed with all the latest news and developments!

Dulcimers in the acoustics community

This is your Webmaster, Will, reporting live from the Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, where, tomorrow morning, a group of researchers from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University will be presenting one of the first comprehensive studies of the acoustics of the Hammered Dulcimer.

Modal response and sound radiation from a hammered dulcimer. Benjamin Y. Christensen, Kent L. Gee, Brian E. Anderson, and Alan
T. Wall (Dept. of Phys. and Astron., Brigham Young Univ., N283 ESC,
Provo, UT 84602, ukeben@gmail.com)

They’ve found, among other things, that in a 16/15 Hammered Dulcimer, the lowest frequencies are a bit too low to be adequately amplified by existing dulcimer bodies, and that the soundholes on the wire-side of the instrument serve a bigger purpose than decoration alone, significantly radiating lots of important frequencies of sound. These findings may seem elementary to us Dulcimer players, but it’s a wonderful thing to see the acoustics community stepping up to study this delightful instrument.

More than anything, it’s nice to meet a few other people at a conference who actually know what a hammered dulcimer is!

Jam videos from last year’s dulcimer festival

Hello all! Webmaster Will here again, and Steve just sent along a wonderful video showing a jam at last year’s festival and an impromptu instructor jam. Take a look as soon as you can to relive last year’s festival, and while you’re at it, check out the Festival History Page for memories from years prior:

9th Annual Colorado Dulcimer Festival logo, and site updates!

Hello all!  I’m Will, your friendly webmaster for this site and for coloradodulcimerfestival.com, and I have two fun little updates.

First, Steve sent along our stunning new logo for this year’s 9th Annual Colorado Dulcimer Festival, designed by Jan Hammond:

Second, we’ve now set up a Festival History page on the Festival website, showing the logo for each year, the featured performers, and the winners for past contests.  So, if you’ve been looking for an excuse to reminisce about past festivals, now’s the perfect chance.

Stay tuned for more updates as we improve the Colorado Dulcimer Festival site, and have a wonderfully musical day.
